Yes you read that correctly WikiJan had been banished from the kitchen! Yes it has come as a shock to me as well, there I was minding my own business when I was told that I was not allowed in my own Kitchen…was it the last thing I cooked? Did someone find fault with my ingredients?? Maybe it might have been the lack of posting my BBQ sauce. How am I supposed to survive?? How will my work peeps participate in Unibiscuit and Gravy Wednesdays?? Or how are my KORT People (the best Physical Therapist in the state if you as me!) going to have the eats they have become used to seeing every Friday?? How will I handle the withdrawals from not being able to cook??? I think I feel the shakes coming on…
Actually WikiJan is getting a fantastic looking new floor. See the flooring in my kitchen is or was over 40 years old. It has seen The Husband grow up, The Daughter spend vacations on it. The world’s best M-I-L spend almost a lifetime treading its length and width. That floor held up to 7 years of renters. It has seen Little Fat Dog live out her last days and the young upstarts Twigg the Bug Eyed Creep and Winston The Fat Head Man Dog tried to dig to China though that floor…its amazing what destruction a bit of determination and puppy teeth can do to old vinyl…but I digress.
We (read ME) had decided it was high time to get something done with that floor so off we went to the local big box hardware store. Now I have to tell you first that WikiJan is this >:<; far away from redoing the whole kitchen so we were looking for something that would be easy to remove when the new floor needed to go in. So we got basic vinyl squares to glue down. Well in the middle of all this The Husband starts removing layer after layer of old flooring and when he got to the wood floor it was like a caterpillar coming out of its cocoon. The wood under all the layers of nastiness was in beautiful condition! All it needed was a bit of sanding to smooth things out, the only fly in the ointment was some water staining over by the sink that we thought we would be able to either bleach or sand off. Sadly it wouldn’t so the lovely blonde wood had to be stained. Well I was OK with that I figured it would be just as rustic dark as it would light.
I to work I went Sunday morning and by the time I returned The Husband had busted hump and got the remaining portion of the floor stained and it looks FANTASTIC!! He did such a good job it looks so good so far. I am super pleased with the way everything is turning out. So here is a look at the process so far…now to get new baseboards laid down and a fresh coat of paint on the cupboards to hold me over till the new ones are installed.
The Destruction begins…
Fiber paper removal….
Mopping up…
After drying out this lovely blond wood appeared…
The Husband hard a work making my floor look good!
Due to a water stain we could not get out we went a bit darker with a stain…
All glossy and shiny…
I LOVE my new kitchen floor! It’s just what I was wanting.
Now go play with your food.

I LOVE the way it turned out! We are going to put up white beadboard on the two walls that have no cabinets half way up topped by a chair rail. I can’t wait to have it all finished.

It looks so much better in person. My photos leave a bit to be desired. Now to get everything back in there so the rest of the house doesn’t look like an episode of Horders.

Hiya Wendy,
It took a while but the end result was worth the wait especially knowing what it had looked like. The Husband actually had a good time doing it. I was just glad to get my domaine back 😀
